Why Your Dishwasher Leaves Dishes Dirty (And How to Fix It)

You load the dishwasher, run a full cycle, open the door… and the dishes are still dirty. It’s one of the most frustrating appliance problems homeowners face. Before you give up and start hand-washing, here are the most common causes — and what you can do about them.

1. Clogged or Dirty Filter

Modern dishwashers have a manual-clean filter at the bottom of the tub. If you’ve never cleaned it, food debris has been accumulating for months (or years), blocking water flow and recirculating dirty water. This is the #1 cause of poor cleaning performance.

Fix: Remove the filter (usually a twist-and-pull mechanism at the bottom), rinse it under running water, and scrub gently with a soft brush. Do this monthly.

2. Spray Arms Are Blocked

The spray arms have small holes that shoot water at your dishes. If those holes are clogged with food particles, mineral deposits, or broken glass, water can’t reach your dishes effectively.

Fix: Remove the spray arms and clean the holes with a toothpick or small wire. Rinse thoroughly before reinstalling.

3. Water Isn’t Hot Enough

Your dishwasher needs water at 120°F-150°F to clean effectively and dissolve detergent properly. If the water entering the dishwasher is too cool, cleaning performance drops dramatically.

Fix: Run the hot water at your kitchen sink for 30-60 seconds before starting the dishwasher. This ensures hot water enters the machine from the first fill. Also check your water heater setting — it should be at least 120°F.

4. You’re Using the Wrong Detergent

Not all dishwasher detergents are equal. Pods and tablets generally outperform liquid and powder detergents. Using too little detergent leaves dishes dirty; using too much leaves white residue.

Fix: Switch to a high-quality detergent pod. If you have hard water, add a rinse aid to prevent spots and film.

5. Dishes Are Loaded Incorrectly

Overcrowding blocks water spray. Nesting bowls and cups trap dirty water. Large items in front of the detergent dispenser prevent it from opening.

Fix: Follow your dishwasher’s loading guide. Face dirty surfaces toward the spray arms. Don’t nest items. Keep the detergent dispenser clear.

6. Wash Impeller or Motor Problem

If you’ve addressed all the above and dishes are still dirty, the wash motor or impeller may be failing. You might notice the dishwasher sounds different — quieter than usual, or with a humming/grinding noise.

Fix: This requires professional repair. The wash motor, impeller, or circulation pump may need replacement.

When to Call a Professional

If cleaning the filter, spray arms, and adjusting your loading and detergent doesn’t solve the problem, it’s time for professional help. A technician can diagnose issues with the wash motor, water inlet valve, control board, or heating element that aren’t easily fixed at home.
